Practices of Grace- #1 Making Space
Laura Longville
By the grace of God, I have been clean and sober for almost 35 years. I am grateful beyond words that I have a life that is full of meaning and purpose. Early in my recovery, I was strongly encouraged to set aside time in the morning to read a meditation that could set the tone for my day. The idea was to make space and be intentional with my life; one day at a time.
I learned how to set my mind on helpful and encouraging ideas and concepts. After all, the way I had been doing life and the decisions I was making were not good.
In the beginning, I took time to ease into my day. Thirty-five years later I continue to do so.
The spiritual practice of simply carving out 15-30 minutes a day dedicated to putting myself in a space to hear from God, has transformed me into who I am today. I know it can be difficult to find the time especially if you’re a mom or dad of young kids, run a company or work 2 jobs. If I can do it, so can you.
It’s really about priorities. Make time for yourself and God.
I know you long for more. More of ……..(fill in the blank)? Maybe you don’t know what that is or maybe it’s crystal clear. Setting aside time in your day to be intentional about you and your relationship with God will come with rewards.
Like a close friend, God longs to be with you too. We make time for those people in our lives who we enjoy being around. God delights in the time the two of you have together as well. Isn’t it encouraging to know that the God of the universe loves to spend time with you?
Practice of Grace (POG): In the next week plan a 15-minute chunk of time in your schedule for you. It can be any time of day. Experiment with the timeframe. See what works best for you. If you’re an early riser, mornings may set you up for success. For others, mid-day or evening may inspire you more.
As you carve out the time, read something that inspires you. You could read your favorite scripture or section from the Bible, or a book you’ve been wanting to read. Another idea……do nothing. Sit in stillness and quiet. We don’t get much of that today, so this could be a gift to you as well.
Once you have the Practice of Grace time arranged in your calendar, each week you can try a new practice of grace. Eventually, you will have dedicated time with God and a practice that brings you into his presence. May you find Him now.
