Finding Your True Home
Laura Longville
We all yearn for a sense of belonging. It's a fundamental human need, a deep-seated desire to be seen, soothed, safe and secure. Yet, often, we confuse belonging with fitting in.
Fitting in is about conforming, about shaping ourselves to meet others' expectations. It's about suppressing individuality to avoid standing out and blending seamlessly into the background. Or it's about seeking external validation, constantly seeking approval from others to feel worthy.
Belonging, on the other hand, is about embracing our true selves, who God says we are, recognizing our gifts, and embracing our uniqueness. It's about finding a community that celebrates our differences, where we can be rightly seen and loved for who we are, flaws and all.
The Spiritual Path
From a spiritual perspective, the journey toward true belonging is a path of understanding and accepting who God says you are and how God has personally designed you. It's about:
Unveiling your true essence: Deep within, you are a unique expression of the Triune God. Prayer and meditation can help you connect with God and yourself, fully embracing all you are and knowing that God sees you and loves you dearly.
Embrace your imperfections: True belonging comes from recognizing perfection as an illusion. Embracing your flaws and vulnerabilities is a sign of strength and authenticity. It also means acknowledging that you are safe in God’s loving care.
Letting go of the need for external validation: When you seek validation from God, you become free from the need for external approval. God accepts you, securing his long and loving gaze upon you.
Finding your tribe: Seek out communities that celebrate and encourage you. People who invite you to a better version of yourself. God draws you into a secure relationship with him and others, not by your doing.
Accepting God’s unfailing love: True belonging begins with receiving God’s affection and refuge. Knowing God sees you, cares for you, and personally meets your needs and desires helps us to know we belong.
The Dangers of Fitting In
Constantly trying to fit in can have detrimental effects:
Loss of authenticity: Suppressing your true self can lead to feelings of emptiness and inauthenticity.
Anxiety and depression: The constant pressure to conform can lead to anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem.
Burnout and resentment: Trying to be someone you are not is exhausting and can lead to resentment and burnout.
Finding Your True Home
The journey towards true belonging is an ongoing process. It requires courage, vulnerability, and a commitment to pursuing God and his plans for your life. But the rewards are immeasurable! When you rest in belonging to God’s family, you experience a deep sense of peace, joy, and fulfillment. You feel connected to something larger than yourself, a part of the intricate tapestry of life.
Remember: You are worthy of love and belonging simply for being you. Embrace your uniqueness, let go of the need to fit in, and discover the true Home that awaits you.
