Making Space for God
Laura Longville
By the grace of God, I have 13, 469 days of sobriety. I am grateful beyond words that I live a life full of meaning and purpose. Early in my recovery, I was strongly encouraged to set aside time in the morning to read a meditation that could set the tone for my day. The idea was to make space and be intentional with my life; one day at a time.
I learned how to set my mind on helpful, encouraging ideas and concepts. After all, the way I had been living was not satisfying. In the beginning, I took time to ease into my day. Almost thirty-seven years later I continue to do so.
The spiritual practice of simply carving out 15-30 minutes a day dedicated to putting myself in a space to hear from God, has transformed me into who I am today. I know it can be difficult to find the time especially if you’re a mom or dad of young kids, run a company, or work 2 jobs. If I can do it, so can you.
It’s really about priorities. Making time for your and God is a gift.
I know you long for more. More of ……..(fill in the blank)?
Maybe you don’t know what that is or maybe it’s crystal clear. Setting aside time in your day to be intentional about you and your relationship with God will come with rewards.
Like a close friend, God wants to spend time with you too. He delights in the time the two of you have together. Isn’t it encouraging to know that the God of the universe loves to hang out with you?
Practices of Grace (POG): In the next week plan a 15-minute chunk of time in your schedule for you. It can be any time of day. Experiment with the timeframe. See what works best for you. If you’re an early riser, mornings may set you up for success. For others, mid-day or evening may inspire you more.
As you carve out time, read or listen to something that inspires you. You could read your favorite scripture or section from the Bible, or a book you’ve been wanting to read. A couple of my favorite Apps to listen to are Lectio 365 and Pray as You Go. These apps provide thought-provoking questions, music, and Scripture to inspire you.
Another idea……do nothing. Sit quietly. We don’t get much of that today, so this could be a gift to you as well.
Once you have the Practice of Grace (POG) time arranged in your calendar, each week you can try a new practice of grace. Eventually, you will have dedicated time with God and a practice that brings you into his presence.
May you find Him now.
