How To Fan The Slow, Steady Flame of Patience

Laura Longville

Life can be unpredictable, and often, things don't go as planned. We might have a vision for how we want our lives to be, but when we encounter setbacks and challenges, it can be hard to trust that things will work out in the end. In these moments, it can be helpful to remember the slow work of God.

The concept of the slow work of God comes from a poem by Pierre Teilhard de Chardin. The poem describes how God's work is like a slow, steady flame that burns in the background of our lives. It's not flashy or dramatic, but it's always there, quietly shaping our lives and guiding us toward our purpose. You can read the poem here or listen to it here.

Trusting in the slow work of God means recognizing that our lives are part of a larger plan, and that the setbacks and challenges we encounter are part of that plan. It means having faith that everything happens for a reason, even if we don't always understand that reason.

So, how can we learn to trust the slow work of God? Here are a few things to keep in mind:

1.    Practice patience: Trusting in the slow work of God requires patience. It's easy to get frustrated when things don't go as planned, but remember that God's plan is unfolding in its own time. Quiet your heart in his presence and wait patiently for Yahweh. Psalm 37:7 TPT

2.    Look for signs of progress: Even though God's work may be slow, there are often signs of progress along the way. Look for small victories and moments of clarity that indicate you're on the right path.

3.    Focus on the journey, not just the destination: It's easy to get caught up in our goals and aspirations, but remember that the journey is just as important as the destination. Embrace the ups and downs of life, and trust that each experience is helping you grow and learn. My eyes are continually toward the Lord. Psalm 25:15a AMP

4.    Connect with others: When we're feeling lost or uncertain, connecting with others who share our beliefs can be helpful. Talk to friends, family members, or spiritual leaders who can offer support and guidance. Bear graciously with one another. Colossians 3:13a AMP

5.    Practice gratitude: Even in the midst of uncertainty, there is always something to be grateful for. Take time each day to reflect on the blessings in your life, and trust that more blessings are on the way.

Trusting in the slow work of God is not always easy, but it can be a source of comfort and strength during challenging times. By practicing patience, focusing on the journey, and connecting with others, we can learn to embrace the slow work of God and trust that everything will work out in the end.
